The Dirt Queen and the Bubble King

The Bubble King is the lord of the suds,
He’ll protect you from dirt from the Queen of the mud.
He’s slippy, he’s slidy.
He keeps neat and tidy.
You’ll sparkle all thanks to the bubb-el-ly King.

“Look! I think he’s in there,” Sam’s dad said, staring at the bath. “Would you like to meet him?”
Sam nodded excitedly and got into the bath.
“Now he’s very shy and sometimes will disappear,” said Sam’s dad.
“Hold out your hands nice and carefully.”
Sam held out his hands which were now wrinkly from the water.
Sam’s dad put some bubbles in his hands and there he was. The Bubble King!
“Hello Mr Bubble King,” Sam whispered.
The Bubble King waved and then disappeared with a POP!
— The Dirt Queen and the Bubble King

This name of the boy in this story is Sam for my friends’ little boy who is 7 months old. Real Sam loves a bath but I didn’t when I was little as the suds got in my eyes (no more tears was a lie!)

I started with the idea of the Bubble King to get the child into a bath but then realised having them so worried about dirt might cause issues which is why the second part was added.

With this (and with the Tippity Top of the Tomato Tree) I imagined a picture book when I was writing it. Alas, I have no artistic talent! When the Bubble King and the Dirt Queen appear, I imagined that it’s actually Sam’s parents moving so they are reflected in the bubble and in the puddle.

Or it could be really them magically appearing if you prefer…
